Ashgrove Optical has been looking after Brisbane’s inner-west for over 35 years. Originally started by local Paul Stevens, optometrists Susie McLennan and Kelly McGregor now head up Ashgrove Optical and continue this long history of serving the Ashgrove community and surrounds.
Susie, Kelly, and the team offer a comprehensive range of optical services, testing, and a wide selection of quality frames, lenses, and contact lenses. They are known for their community focus and tailored, comprehensive advice and care.
Susie and Kelly work with adults and children and accept referrals from GPs and specialists.
Ashgrove Optical is proud to be an independent Optometrist.
As an independent optometrist we accept all health funds and can provide on the spot claiming through Hicaps.
In 2023 Ashgrove Optical kickstarted a new chapter with a new look and a new, bigger clinic to meet the growing demands of the area.
The new clinic, situated in the centre of Ashgrove, is fitted with the latest optical technology allowing the team to deliver high standard eye examinations.
Our Equipment
OCT - Ocular Coherence Tomography
An OCT gives a cross-sectional scan of the macula and optic nerve. It is able to visualise to 5 microns. This allows for monitoring of any macular diseases, especially macular degeneration, and glaucoma.
Visual Fields Machine
The Visual fields machine has many applications in modern Optometry. It is a simple test that checks the health of the optic nerve by measuring the sensitivity of your side vision to dim light. It is used to monitor for glaucoma, medication toxicity screening to name a few. The Zeiss Humphrey Visual fields machine is quipped to perform the Binocular Estermann Test for driver’s licence vision requirements.
Retinal photography
Our practice utilises Ultra-Wide Field retinal photography which enables us to photograph the retinal periphery without the need for dilating drops. This enables accurate imaging of the maculae, optic nerve, and peripheral retina. This is especially useful in monitoring maculae changes, glaucoma, and diabetic retinal changes. It also allows for monitoring of retinal scars and choroidal naevi.
Corneal Topography
This machine plots the shape of your cornea, the clear layer over the iris (which is the coloured part of your eye).
This is used in screening for keratoconus and the effect of pterygium on the cornea, to name a few.
Fees & Medicare
Our practice bulk bills all eligible consultations direct to Medicare. Please ask our friendly staff if you have any questions regarding your eligibility.
Some additional fees apply for some services that are not yet covered by Medicare. If these apply to you, our staff will be pleased to explain these fees. These extra examinations are typically on indication.
We accept the following payment methods. Layby is also available.

It was the fashion and flare of spectacles that first caught Susie’s eye. Then, after discovering the amazing impact that clear vision can have on improving people’s quality of life, she knew there was only one career for her: Optometry.
During her studies, Susie realised her true passion lies in ocular therapeutics and after graduating in 1995, she spent over 20 years working in this field. Then, in 2017, Susie and her flat mate, Kelly, opened their very own clinic, Ashgrove Optical.
Susie is proud to be a part of the Ashgrove community, and enjoys working with locals wanting fashionable, unique, and quality glasses.
